catfish fishing catfishing info, catfishing information

IMPORTANT FISHING FACT!
IF THE FIDDLERS ARE BITING AND
STRIPPING YOUR BAIT WHERE YOU'RE
FISHING...THERE ARE NO QUALITY
SIZED FISH THERE!

I can't stress that enough ... When you're fishing and catching larger fish you should be able to notice that those little rod peckers aren't messin with your poles. This is due to size difference mainly ... larger fish will scare off and even drive off smaller fish just by being in the area.

The little catfish get gone just out of fear of being eaten like some kind of natural instinct maybe or perhaps the larger ones do actually try to feed on their smaller kindred. I've seen people catch a lot of fish on fingerling blues and channels ...

I won't use them as I'm not certain of the legality of it and they don't bite on them very good it seems like but when one is caught on a fingerling channel or blue as bait it's usually a pretty big fish. Catfishing, I've also seen near dead blues about 8 to 10 lbs totally skinned alive by other blues ... I say this because of the more rounded mouth prints on the fish's body ... flathead bite would have been a more straight across imprint.

This info will help you not sit there and mess with fiddlers all day. If you're fishing from the bank and fiddlers are messing with you and you are just camping there watch when you start getting good fish on .... the smaller fish won't be biting any more or will at least quit until the larger fish move on through. If you're in a boat these smaller fish are good indicators because if they're there and biting there are no big ones in the area.

if they do that usually means larger catfish have moved into the area and if you're not catching any you'll need to use a different bait ... most likely there's catfish in the area hunting and probably the best thing to use is live bait

smaller ones work well on blues or use live shad or take and cut the head off a live shad or slit it's body cavity open and hook it through the eyes and cast it out .... WAY OUT! and then reel it back slowly letting it rest in the area you want to be fishing ... if there's current you won't need to do that if the water is moving really good. Doing that though imitates a wounded baitfish to a certain degree and will produce a lot of good fish.  click here for more info on catfish fishing catfishing info and catfishing information

best catfish bait

fishing

catfishing tips

What's the best Catfish Bait?

The best bait is what they feed on naturally... Shad is the usual preference of the fish where shad are located but people place too much on baits when they should be focusing on the environment the fish are in and locate the fish instead of going out ... sitting in one public fishing hole and throwing every kind of bait they can think of until a fish happens to come through or mess with dinks all day long with those chicken livers. focus more on fish location instead of some kinda magic potion and you'll do a lot better ... fish structure ... current eddies ... humps ... anything to locate the fish cause just sitting in one spot and throwing all kinds of baits at them makes about as much sense as going bass fishing on the dam of a pond and throwing every bait there is at them that you have in your tackle box all day long and never moving and when you throw that last lure you have at them and nothing takes the bait then you pack up and go home and tell the wife ... they weren't biting today. .... when this same guy would normally be working the creek and around stumps and whatever else is in the pond ... wonder why catfishermen don't view catfishing the same way because that's how you have to do catfishing too ... you can't just sit in one spot and expect to catch fish or think the fish are there ... you just need to figure out what they'll bite on ... it ain't like that.

Become more mobile when you're catfishing with rod&reel and that'll help a lot. See something sticking up out of the water, sneak over and throw a fresh shad head by it. If you see a good current eddy then go throw a fresh shad head or two around that ... in the eddy itself, then a few around the point that the current is coming by and one out in the current. You only have to stay in one spot about 30 minutes to find out if the fish are in that area because it doesn't take long if they're there.

After the lake has risen due to flood waters coming into the lake the fish will go up into the freshly flooded vegetation to feed heavily ... this is a great opportunity to really hammer some catfish. Using fresh shad heads and cut Bluegill this week I've taken 3 sets of clients out and they all had a great time fishing the flood waters. The first trip on May 2nd was freshly flooded and I located some fish on a plateau and we caught 20 fish in that one little spot with the biggest being 20 lbs. The second trip they moved out of that area as we'd had two more feet of water come in and we found the fish in a spot that I'd told a friend of mine they'd be in in a few days. We went up there and they were up there by Thursday and they caught 20 fish there. Saturday they were there again but then Monday they pulled off of that spot ... I had the KTUL Channel 8 Good Day Tulsa crew with me and the fish had pulled out of the spot we found the fish Thursday and Saturday and I covered that area a little too long but the fish had moved back to the Plateau we found fish on on the 2nd but by the time we'd found the fish everyone was too tired to continue. We got one good 10 lb'r run and missed that one when the 5 minute countdown came in. I think I've figured out why they pulled out of that spot we were in Thursday and Saturday ... they opened the Tainter Gates on the dam and the Lake level started dropping so the fish pulled back ... that's a natural instinct of the fish to pull back to deeper water when the river or lake crests. I didn't know they'd opened the Trainters on Monday so I'm pretty sure that's why the fish weren't still there. The weather was great and the wind was right so that's about the only thing it could have been .... I guess.

The point of this is to show that you need to be more mobile when you're fishing for catfish ... I've already written this in different places on my Tips Section but I thought I'd go ahead and write a page on just that so that no one will miss it. If you're using fresh cut shad, Bluegill, or Buffalo and you're not catching anything in 30 to 45 minutes then you need to move. If you see some gulls working over an area then get downwind of them and you'll most likely catch catfish. If you see a good current eddy then work that over really good. Locate the fish and don't expect them to locate you and you'll do a lot better.

CATFISHING - Bluecat Fishing Tips

It's a common misconception about summertime catfishing by fishing deep in the summer and a lot of environments won't allow the fish to be deep this time of year ...

In fact the shallower you fish is the best way to summertime catfishing in lakes that don't have much or any current. the thermocline will keep the fish above 6 ft or less.

Here's what I look for ...

I look for a decent shad population in an area ... now this means just seeing a few flipping on top ... you most of the time don't want to see millions of shad in an area because if you do there's probably not any fish feeding on them ... that ain't always the case but most of the time it is. you also want to see other things that'd draw the fish into an area like vegetation ... flooded areas like when the lake comes up a few feet and covers a new area that hasn't been under water for a while ...

shad in the area with fresh vegetation is an excellent place to fish most of the time. by fresh vegetation I mean that hasn't been under water over a few months ... the fish will be up in there feeding on shad and the vegetation. I think this type area is such a good draw because the shad can't escape a catfish when there's stuff in their way. In areas like this I've sight fished and almost every time I see a big swirl I'll throw a shadhead right on top of the area and a lot of times you can't even get the rod in the holder before the fish nails it because that's what they're doin is chasin those shad through the weeds and grass.

This pattern is for more of a muddy water lake and clear water lakes are quite a bit different for daytime fishing ... these will be excellent spots for night fishing in clear water conditions.

Flathead Bait I just remembered and didn't know about that you may try if they're in your area is bullheads. They're a little bitty green catfish that don't usually get much bigger than 1# around here but I have seen them get up to about 3# as I've caught some while fishing for largemouth. I caught them on crankbaits ... bass colored medium diving Bomber. The best thing to catch bullheads on though is worms or chicken liver but they'll eat anything ...

catfishing and fishing for catfish tips

usually when there are bullheads in a body of water they pretty much are the main fish there as they populate really fast and are hard to get rid of when they become resident in a pond. Best thing to get rid of them is to throw a couple of flathead in the pond but largemouth bass will wipe the floor with them too. If you put 5 or 6 3# largemouth or bigger in a pond with bullheads they'll clean the pond up in a few years.

To fish with them take a pair of wire cutters and remove the spines on them and the flathead will engulf them. For some reason the flathead and larger blues really go after them. This is not something I've ever tried but seen an illegal commercial fisherman using them catching a ton of blues on them with one of them rod&reel boats.
